About Us and FAQs

What/who is Rainstorm Knits?

We are a small shop offering colorful, organic custom clothing in jersey and french terry knit fabric! We are working on adding all sizes of clothing to our shop, and we welcome custom orders.

Rainstorm Knits is run by me, Kathryn, with help from my husband and young children. I have a passion for ecology (my day job), backpacking in the wilderness, gardening, and my family.

We believe clothing should be comfortable, durable, safe, colorful, ethical and environmentally friendly. We sew with patterns that have been thoroughly tested for comfort, safety, durability and fit. Our fabrics have ethical supply chains and low-toxicity printing and dyeing processes to minimize their environmental and health impacts. At the moment all fabrics we carry are printed in Europe or the USA and most carry Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and/or OEKO-TEX certifications.

What is GOTS? OEKO-TEX? CPSC?

These are certifications that help us be confident the materials we are using are safe for the environment and people involved in growing, producing, and wearing them.

GOTS, Global Organic Textile Standard, is currently the cleanest certification available and includes no forced or child labor in addition to high environmental health standards. This certification is the "gold standard".

OEKO-TEX 100 is a certification focused on the regulation and limitation of the amount of chemicals, carcinogens, etc present. It is a good "non toxic" certification, although social impacts are not considered. Some of our fabrics carry both GOTS and OEKO-TEX 100 certifications.

CPSC is the US Consumer Product Safety Commission which has set rules regarding safety standards for raw materials and finished products, such as flammability and lead, as well as labeling. Everything made by Rainstorm Knits is CPSC compliant!

How do your grow with me clothes work?

Grow-with-me clothes are designed to use fold-over cuffs and internal drawstrings to allow the same garment to fit for three times longer than an average ready-made garment. For instance, the grow-with-me size ranges include 3m to 12m, 1 to 3 years, 3 to 6 years, 6 to 9 years, and 9 to 12 years. This is more economical, ecologically sustainable, and simpler all around!

How often do you have new stock?

At the moment - we are pausing our fabric retail until after we have finished moving states. But typically, we get new fabrics in all the time that we post to retail! As we mentioned, most of our fabrics are sourced from Europe, so timelines are not completely predictable, especially with covid. If there's something you'd like, just ask!

For custom order clothing, we maintain a Custom Order Fabric Choices Catalog which is regularly updated with small quantities of new stock.

We also regularly post new clothing pieces, with occasional "drops" of coordinating sets. Fabrics and designs used in drops will be limited run and available in ready to ship or made to order options.

Tell me about your workspace.
We are a home-based business located in a smoke-free, cat-, dog- and child-friendly household. We do our absolute best to keep pets and their hair away from the materials but we do not have an isolated studio. If you have specific allergy or other concerns, feel free to reach out!
